Review

Dan Perlman‘s latest short film ‘Practice Space’ delivers a refreshing blend of humor, warmth, and heartfelt reflection in a coming-of-age tale that will resonate deeply with today’s youth. Starring Alex Chavez and Yan Bo Lin as Edwin and Steven, respectively, the film follows the journey of two best friends as they navigate personal dilemmas (Edwin’s romantic interest) and career aspirations (Steven’s playwright ambition) against the backdrop of an urban American city.

Perlman neatly weaves together Edwin and Steven’s own obstacles, offering a poignant exploration of the anxieties and indecisions that often overwhelm young people. Chavez and Lin’s charming performances infuse the characters with authenticity, creating a dynamic on-screen chemistry throughout. Interestingly, both actors appeared in Perlman’s equally commendable short ‘Cramming‘.

With a narrative structure that holds a mirror up to both protagonists, the film is a celebration of friendship, showcasing the highs, the lows and the silliness between Edwin and Steven.

Michael Kohlbrenner’s high quality cinematography captures the urban landscape, enhancing the film’s aesthetic appeal. The well-crafted visuals serve as a compelling backdrop to the characters’ journey.
Perlman’s coming-of-age comedy is a delightful blend of humor, wit, and heart. It’s a must-watch for anyone seeking an entertaining tale of teenage camaraderie.
