Directed by Bradley Hawkins, from a script by Hawkins and Jake Stetler, ‘Calf Rope’ is a short coming-of-age drama film that explores the affinity between a grandfather and his grandson. Gorman Ruggiero leads the cast as Mac, an aging former rodeo cowboy who takes his curious grandson, Brandon (Lukas Barnett), on an adventure through his previous passions. Additional cast include; Avery Kellington (Corah), and Jackie Walker (Sarah). An endearing tale of multi-generation attachment and admiration with a poignant underbelly.
The 29-minute film opens in 1966 Oklahoma. Brandon, who has become engrossed in the cowboy sphere, probes his grandfather about the tales of his past life. As their relationship blossoms – with trips to a rodeo and a cattle auction – the short carefully unravels at Mac’s ill-health which is certain to leave no dry eye with the viewing audience. In spite of the melancholic storyline, the drama is an uplifting watch and will bring back sweet memories of the relationship we had with our own grandparents.
Bradley Hawkins has delivered a captivating short that shouldn’t be overlooked. The entire cast delivers impeccable performances throughout, most notably from rising star Lukas Barnett – a debut performance that deserves high praise and acclaim. Gorman Ruggiero’s portrayal is equally impressive. Based on the Writer/Director’s own personal relationship with his grandfather, that drama is superbly crafted with stellar cinematography, production design and post-production. With cinematic production value and high-quality sound, ‘Calf Rope’ is certain to keep viewers engaged, entertained and touched. Highly recommended.
