Directed by Hector Salgado, ‘African Drivers – Lion Lights Story’ is a short documentary that illustrates the political and agricultural plight of the Masaai community in Kenya, and one teenage boy’s revolutionary invention. Narrated by Brian Stivale, the film delves into the culture, history and traditions of the Maasai people – predominately shining a light on the warriors who vigorously defend their livestock (cows) from the Lions. An uplifting tale of community and craftmanship.
Throughout the 25-minutes, the narrator educates the viewer about the Masaai way of life – exploring their political displacement that led them into a territory infiltrated with livestock killing Lions. Despite traditional efforts to reduce the harm to their economy, the Lions persisted – until a 13-year-old inventor transformed their strategy. Richard Turere created an ingenuous light system that would repel Lion attacks on livestock. His concept has had a life-changing effect on the local community – and beyond!
Hector Salgado has created an immersive documentary that will no doubt educate and inspire. The story of Richard Turere is compelling viewing – his contribution to the Masaai community is highly commendable. Visually, the film is beautifully shot – with stellar cinematography from start-to-finish. Sound, post-production and animation is of a respectable industry standard. Highly recommended.
