5/5

Review

Written and directed by Tisania Francis-Smith, ‘The Talk’ is a short poetic docu-drama that explores the topic of police brutality and injustice within the black community. The narrative is orchestrated around the visual poem ‘The Talk’, written and voiced by Spoken by T (Tisania Francis-Smith). Starring Spoken by T, Veah Tatiana, Peter Ubreye and Trendi, the film centers around the cautious behavior of black and brown people in society, which would typically be unacquainted with to others. The film was produced to bring guidance to non-white members of society and a wider awareness to the general public. ‘The Talk’ is an absorbing film with stellar poetic linguistics.

Throughout the 6-minute film, Spoken by T narrates her self-written poem that examines the conversations within minority households in order to limit unfair treatment from the police. The docu-drama sheds a light on a brother’s protection of his sister as well as his close male friend – with the overarching message to avoid suspicious behavior that may incite police scrutiny.

Tisania Francis-Smith (Spoken by T) has created a riveting piece of film, with captivating poetry throughout. Spoken by T delivers an intriguing performance that will certainly leave viewers hanging on every word. The visual performances are equally commendable, in spite of the harrowing narrative underbelly. Cinematography is finely crafted, with high quality sound and post-production. ‘The Talk’ is a well-made awareness film that shouldn’t be overlooked. Highly recommended.
