The Assignment

A modern twist on classic suspense.
4/5

Review

In James Cunningham’s thrilling ode to Hitchcock’s legacy, ‘Psycho’, the human psyche is dissected in a chilling pursuit of the elusive “perfect murder”. Set against the backdrop of Melbourne, Australia, the film stars David Kara and Francis Ryan as Harrison and Leo, two students consumed by the sinister art as part of a university assignment. Slick, modern, and unapologetically provocative, the film tantalizes viewers with its titillating visuals, including full frontal male nudity, while delivering a suspenseful narrative.

Despite its inspired roots, the film’s plot twist feels somewhat anticipated, lacking the savage punch it could have delivered. Nevertheless, the respectable acting by the cast, particularly Kara and Ryan, keeps the tension palpable. Lukas Yannoutsos’s cinematography is commendable, skillfully framing the suspenseful moments throughout the film.

While it might not reach the heights of its Hitchcockian inspiration, ‘The Assignment’ remains an enjoyable watch, blending modern sensibilities with classic suspense. Cunningham’s direction ensures an engaging viewing experience, making this thriller a noteworthy addition to the genre, leaving audiences both captivated and eager for more.
