The 39-minute film opens by exploring the life of Joe Carstairs, who was known for being the fastest woman on water in the 1920s. Born Marion, she was a lesbian oil-heiress who lived her life in men’s clothing. The documentary also educates viewers about some of the lesbian and bisexual women from Ferguson’s Gang. They were National Trust “gangsters” – an anarchic group of women formed in 1927. We also learn about the poet Alfred Tennyson, and the painters Jony Seely and Paul Paget. A fascinating watch that brings attention to historical LGBTQ+ figures that were deliberately erased from the history books.
