Written and directed by Jesse Charbonier, ‘Stormy Weather Rhapsody’ is a short film that dramatizes the preparation and collaborative performance of Jesse Charbonier and the Joel Hall dancers. Set in Chicago, the film explores the struggles within the creative industry and the hardship of home-life whilst striving for success. Jesse Charbonier, Jacqueline Sinclair, Joel Hall (and the dancers), portray fictionalized versions of themselves throughout. Despite its poignant narrative, the film concludes with a delightful jazz performance.
The 19-minute film opens 5 months prior to the performance. At the Joel Hall Dancers & Centre, a group of dancers are in rehearsal with Jacqueline Sinclair, the artistic director. The narrative follows the hardships of a rejection, domestic abuse and the stress of creative aspirations. The film includes several motivational quotes from start-to-finish. The audience will be treated to a stunning performance by jazz vocalist Jesse Charbonier and the Joel Hall dancers.
‘Stormy Wealth Rhapsody’ is essentially an experimental film that documents the trials of dream-chasing. The film acts as a dramatization of real-life events leading up to the performance. Despite seeing the camera in mirror-reflection, and the acting delivery at times inauthentic, viewers will be enthralled by the fly-on-the-wall narrative. The musical and dance performance are of an exceptional standard, showcased by commendable cinematography, sound and post-production. An entertaining watch.
