Written and directed by Ryan Dawson, ‘Disconnected’ is an experimental drama that explores the reduction of face-to-face interaction sparked by the birth of social media. Dakotah Todd stars as a young man who eliminates his social media in a bid to establish genuine relationships. Filmed without dialogue, the short reflects the social challenges that inhabit the youth of today.
The 3-minute film opens at a café, where an isolated character scrolls through his social media accounts. As sorrow succumbs him, he discards his cell-phone and observes the real world – a world where everyone is transfixed to a device. A promising encounter with a young woman (April Davis) is short-lived by her own social media engrossment. A tragic narrative that mirrors modern society.
Ryan Dawson (Writer/Director) has created a cautionary tale that highlights the cataclysmic society social media has produced. Despite the film showcasing a young couple and a group of friends, their interaction is limited by their personal cellular devices. ‘Disconnected’ is a thought provoking short that will ring true with many viewers. Social media is inarguably leading us/society into greater isolation and disconnect – a disturbing veracity that Dawson’s narrative doesn’t shy away from exploring. Cinematography, editing, lighting and sound are commendable throughout. Despite the omittance of dialogue, Dakotah Todd delivers a fine performance from start to finish. A somber watch. Highly recommended.
