Directed by Edward J Douglas, from a screenplay by Daniel Roy, ‘Swiped’ takes a satirical look into online dating through futuristic technology. Nicola Chapman leads the cast as Melody – a middle aged singleton who uses augmented reality to interact with prospective dates. Peter Seaton-Clark stars as Melody’s match – but their conversation exposes the detriments of the technology. A humorous narrative, albeit with frightening inevitability.
The 4-minute short opens with Melody sitting alone inside a contemporary bar. An optic device has been installed in her eye, allowing her to like, reject and meet potential partners. After a series of left swipes, Melody swipes right to a man of her liking and they are both introduced. Unfortunately, her dates conversation replicates the robotic spam artist you would expect from current technology – exposing the inevitable misuse. As Melody flees, the man introduces himself to another potential victim.
‘Swiped’ is a smart comedy with a clever narrative and admirable special effects. Nicola Chapman delivers a fine performance as Melody – a character with a no-nonsense attitude that isn’t afraid to toy with the spam artist. Daniel Roy (screenwriter) has developed an interesting concept which allows viewers a glimpse into the future of dating. Cinematography by Debi Bode is simply outstanding from start to finish, accompanied by high quality sound, editing and interior lighting. Edward J Douglas and his cast/crew deserve high praise – a captivating watch throughout.
