Directed by Antoinette Scherer, from a script by Sherer and Joe Rooney, ‘Captain Tiny Hands’ is a short musical comedy film starring Ian Coppinger as the eponymous character. The narrative, which centers around a residential community, follows an eccentric man with doll-sized hands coming to the aid of his dilemma-stricken neighbors (Michelle Read and Danny Kehoe). With a catchy musical soundtrack by Rooney, Theodore Gibbons and Ciaran Sheehan, the film is guaranteed to reward viewers with light-hearted entertainment.
Throughout the 4-minute runtime, Captain Tiny Hands provides a helping hand to local residents in his street. His first act of kindness is by retrieving a woman’s dislodged mobile phone from her car seat. When his abnormality is exposed, her reaction is far from congenial. The retort is repeated when he recovers a man’s car keys from the back of a radiator. The narrative (and its musical accompaniment) is predominately jovial and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Antoinette Scherer and Joe Rooney have crafted a comical watch that is bound to spark a few laughs from the viewer. The superhero element is deliberately offbeat for a humorous effect – and it certainly works. The performances, as expected from the genre, are intentionally frivolous, albeit commendable. The musicality is the film’s winning card – with a snappy melody and witty lyricality. Cinematography, sound and post-production are of a high-quality standard. A worthy watch.
