Schooltime

A poignant drama that explores the domino-effect of human tragedy.
4/5

Review

Directed by Teja Geenugunta, from a script by Geenugunta and Siddarth Maganty, ‘Schooltime’ is a short drama film that delves into the contagion effect of human tragedy. Michael Lake stars as a sole parent who is left bereft and mentally fractured after the killing of his adolescent son (Jazane Guiste). Sparked by the rise of school shootings in North American, the narrative probes the unfortunate consequences of antagonistic behavior. A hard-hitting and poignant watch that explores themes of fatherhood, depression and grief.

The 7-minute drama, which was remarkably shot in 2 days on an iPhone, opens with an introduction to the perpetrator. Engrossed in a first-person shooter game, the young man speaks of his general abomination – fueled by a troubled upbringing; neglect and abuse. The remainder of the narrative chronicles the victim’s last movements with his father. The young father, who has turned to alcohol and has relinquished his life-purpose, speaks about the devastating impact his son’s death has kindled.

Geenugunta and Maganty have vividly demonstrated, through this somber tale, the domino effect of a human catastrophe. Under Geenugunta’s admirable direction, the cast deliver upstanding portrayals that undoubtedly seal the short’s fate – an emotional performance by Michael Lake is certain to keep viewers engaged. In spite of the production’s low budget technicality, Saurav Pasrija (DOP) manages to draw-out adept and meritorious cinematography. Sound and post-production is equally laudable. Highly recommended viewing.

Brief Synopsis

Do broken people break more people? The short film weighs this question closely. It looks at the trail of damage a disturbed teenager leaves behind in an act of fatal violence fueled by a life of hate and neglect. Cole is a young single father who comes undone by the personal loss he suffers in this tragedy. In him, we see the slow creep of despair and the deep grief of a parent who couldn’t help their child.
