Directed by Barbara Bargiel, from a script by Alex Smith, ‘Generic’ is a short drama film that explores a hostile relationship. Monique Helena Todd stars as Jesse, with Sam Purkis as Blair. The film, set in real time, follows Jesse’s return to her marital home after breaking-up with husband Blair. ‘Generic’ takes viewers on a mysterious journey in an effort to understand the root cause of the separation.
The 4-minute drama opens with an empowered Jesse sneaking into the residence. The film makes experimental use of nature sounds throughout – which sparks high suspense. As Jesse enters discreetly, Blair arrives home – igniting an exchange of conflict. Blair appears tense, heated and aghast as Jesse holds her resistance. The film hints at a marital affair, without giving away too much. A puzzling narrative that will keep viewers engaged and curious. The drama is set entirely within the marital home and explores themes of regret, revenge, guilt, female empowerment and psychology.
Barbara Bargiel (Director) has created a fascinating little film that is beautifully shot and constructed. Despite the narrative (written by Alex Smith) being shrugged in mystery, the viewer is treated to judgment by characterization alone – which makes for a compelling watch. Cinematography is outstanding from start to finish – wrapped up with commendable sound, editing and lighting. Highly recommended.
