A poignant drama that delves into a fractured mother/daughter relationship.

Review

Directed by Lucas Cavanagh, from a screenplay by Cavanagh and Ben Brown, ‘The Star and the Black Space Around It’ is a short drama film that examines the fractured relationship between a mother and her famous daughter. Ava Paulson stars as Julianne, a decorated actress, with Liz Rossi as her mother (Joan). The two-handler delves into the characters bitter communication, or lack of, after Julianne receives a prestigious acting award. Exploring themes of resentment and envy, the drama unearths the malice with in some mother/daughter kinships.

The 17-minute film opens with Joan watching, in discontent, her daughter’s televised acceptance speech. Following Julianne’s win, she returns to her hometown to celebrate her success with her mother – but their conversations run intolerably cold. In spite of the disheartening subject matter, the film doesn’t shy away from unveiling a brief endearing moment.

Lucas Cavanagh and Ben Brown have crafted a respectable drama that accentuates the begrudging behavior of some mothers in response to their daughter’s prosperity – an unvoiced topic that warrants exploration. Paulson and Rossi deliver captivating portrayals that guarantee audience engagement. Technically, the short is flawlessly assembled with stellar cinematography (Dylan Clark), sound and post-production. A touching, albeit somber tale that will resonate with many. Highly recommended.
