Written and directed by Tom Anson, ‘I Like it Here’ is a short drama film that explores the life of a now London-based refugee after fleeing war-torn Ukraine. Sean Rey leads the cast as the central protagonist, Nikita, and delves into his struggle to adapt to his adopted city, his yearning for his family back in Ukraine, and his trepidation over an unforeseen race-based attack. Shot in black-and-white, the drama is a well-crafted short that finely showcases the introspection of a refugee.
The 9-minute film opens with startling facts about the 7.5 million Ukrainians who have fled their homeland following the 2022 Russian invasion. The central character, Nikita, is one of the 60,000 housed in the United Kingdom. Despite being a fictional short, the drama upholds the real-life sentiments of those missing their homeland, their family and the uncertainty of life in a foreign country. Without spoiling the narrative climax, Nikita encounters a troubling situation over mistaken identity that leaves him startled and dejected.
Tom Anson has excelled with his narrative intensions. The short is tastefully constructed with a stellar performance by Sean Rey (Nikita). The use of black-and-white cinematography aids the overall narrative tone – reflecting on the protagonists subdued outlook and despair. Sound and post-production is equally commendable. A first-rate production that shouldn’t be overlooked. Highly recommended viewing.
