Backwards

A charmingly unconventional tale about a man who walks backwards.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Sarah Klearman, ‘Backwards’ is an offbeat drama film that delves into a peculiar affliction of walking in reverse. Blake Copeland leads the cast as the eccentric central character, Oliver – a kite enthusiast with an inability to walk forwards. Additional cast include; Emily Windler, and Jacqueline MacDonald. The quirky narrative, fueled by the film’s odd subject matter, has an unheralded comical underbelly that will entertain and charm.

Life for Oliver may appear uneasy, but the protagonist has adapted his untroubled life around his ‘condition’ – noted by the addition of rear-view mirrors on his spectacles. In spite of challenging dog walks, Oliver is immersed in the word of kites – seemingly encouraged by his father during childhood. After collecting a used kite from a Craigslist seller, Oliver is propelled to move forward after a chance encounter with another woman. An endearing watch that will impel a few smiles.

Despite limited dialogue throughout, Sarah Klearman unquestionably excels in keeping viewers engaged and captivated. Blake Copeland’s distinct performance is blazingly meritorious with subtle humor throughout – his portrayal is certain to keep the audience engrossed. Technically, the drama is eclipsed by stellar cinematography, music (a vital tone-setter), sound and post-production. An unmissable drama – regardless of its abnormality.
