Written and directed by Aaron Van Maanen, ‘Hypodermic’ is a short drama film that explores a grief-stricken young man’s unorthodox coping mechanism. Lakin Mims leads the cast as the central protagonist, Isaiah, who finds himself in the midst of a self-imposed remedial after the accidental death of his best friend. Tiffany Liechty co-stars as Isaiah’s supportive girlfriend, Jackie. Throughout the 22-minute runtime, suspense and mystery is certain to enthrall, beguile and intrigue the audience – as the narrative is carefully disentangled to reveal a startling revelation. Themes of guilt, shame and loss play a pivotal role throughout – which is flawlessly executed by Lakin Mims (Isaiah).
As the opening scene unwinds, it becomes evident that something is not quite right with Isaiah. In spite of girlfriend Jackie’s comforting efforts, Isaiah remains tight-lipped about the circumstance behind his mysterious state of mind – which is also accompanied by an unknown physical affliction. The audience is bound to be startled by the out-of-the-ordinary medicinal effect that Isaiah has resorted to.
The themes of grief and guilt play a salient role in the overall plot, which Maanen delivers effectively – albeit in an atypical fashion. Lakin Mims gives a commendable performance that aids the overall tone – admirably conveyed without overstatement. Neal Johnson’s craftmanship in cinematography is equally praiseworthy, which rewards the production with blazing cinematic production value. Sound and post-production is equally laudable. An unmissable, albeit quirky watch. Highly recommended.
