Written and directed by Olivia Gropp, ‘Traders’ is a dark mystery thriller set entirely in a grim record store. Gropp (Director) leads the cast as the girl, with Brian Dole as the young man. The store owner is played by Geno Bisconte. The short film explores psychopathic behaviour, revenge and murder. ‘Traders’ is a gripping ride of suspense that will keep you hooked throughout. An outstanding debut short by Olivia Gropp.
The 9-minute film opens with spectacular cinematography by Wesley Mellott and Adam Hribar. Footsteps of a girl on the street are intercut with a young man cleaning homicidal blood at the back of a record store. His efforts are interrupted when the girl enters. Gropp (The Girl) delivers a captivating performance that oozes confidence and attitude. Brian Dole’s performance as the young man is disturbing and chilling throughout. The young man, appearing phlegmatic, greets the girl at the counter. After exchanging “junk” items for cash, the girl spots the store owners body (Geno Bisconte) on the mirror reflector. A pursuit of revenge follows.
Olivia Gropp (Writer/Director/Star) and the cast/crew have created an impressive short that ticks all the right boxes. Visually, the film is of high standard with terrific cinematography, lighting, editing and sound. Narratively, engaging characterization strengthens the otherwise mundane plotline. High praise to Gropp – a brilliant debut short.
