Written, directed and co-composed by Will Wightman, ‘Heart Failure’ is a musical-comedy film that follows Frank (Leon Newman) through the demise of his relationship. The narrative is told through song – coupled with electronic dance music (EDM). Izzie Frymann stars as Lizzie (Frank’s girlfriend) with Harry Hancock as Ali (Frank’s close confident/flat-mate). A vibrant, witty short film with a catchy musical number and spectacular cinematography. Will Marchant (Cinematography) co-composed the soundtrack.
The 10-minute film opens with a sequence of humorous sex scenes of Frank and girlfriend Lizzie. The fourth wall is broken throughout as Frank delivers his comical monologue through song. Act 2 showcases the relationship breakdown, exploring our protagonist’s mental health – particularly anxiety. Albeit a comedy, the film poignantly delivers scenes of a break-up and the reconstruction thereafter. The film concludes with Frank exploring the world of dating.
Will Wightman and his cast/crew have created an outstanding film that doesn’t shy away from showcasing the high and low of a relationship. Lyrics and music are equally praiseworthy as is the cast performance. Leon Newman (Frank) delivers a note-worthy performance as the central protagonist – his comical spirit will keep viewers engaged from start to finish. A highly recommended short film.
