One Hot Summer Day

An intimate portrait of a solitary taxi driver, revealed through fleeting encounters in a single day.

Review

On the surface, ‘One Hot Summer Day’ is a simple premise: a taxi, a driver, a city brimming with strangers. But Snezhana Yugai’s short film isn’t about plot – it’s about mood, restraint, and the things we reveal when we think no one’s listening.

Maya, played with subtlety by Ekaterina Danilian, is a woman who has perfected the art of invisibility. A solitary taxi driver under the blistering sun, she keeps to herself, detached yet observant, a ghost gliding through the city’s arteries. It’s not until her passengers begin to unload their lives into her backseat that the film finds its rhythm – a rhythm composed of frustration, comedy, tragedy, and, eventually, quiet devastation.

Each fare is its own vignette. Anton Smorodin gives a twitchy, discomforting performance as a man on edge – his unresolved dental agony bordering on menace. Valeriia Miftakhova charms as Eva, an aspiring actress whose ambition briefly pulls Maya into conversation. And finally Vadim Kaplin, dressed absurdly for a bachelor party, injects an unexpected jolt of dark humour – a rare moment where Maya lets a crack of personality shine through.

Sergey Kostromin’s cinematography is exceptional – every shot composed with painterly care, balancing natural light and intimacy. The film feels lived-in, humid, real. The production design, sound, and editing work in complete harmony – rich in detail, never distracting.

It’s the final act that seals the film’s success. When Maya’s car breaks down and she becomes the passenger, the shift is startling. Her walls lower. A buried heartbreak surfaces. The roles reverse, and everything we’ve observed – all those silences – finally make sense. Her new driver, played with empathy by Dmitrii Kononov, becomes the catalyst for an emotional reckoning. A poignant tale, beautifully told. Highly recommended.
