Review

The Portuguese music duo Calema, composed of brothers António and Fradique Ferreira, crafts a breathtaking visual and musical experience in their music video ‘Calema – Zongô Memá’. Directed by filmmaker Nuno Pinto, this is a deeply personal odyssey – one that speaks of ambition, nostalgia, and the unshakable pull of home.

Opening with the brothers in the present day, the film sets its sights on Pico Cão Grande, a towering monolith in São Tomé and Príncipe’s Obô Natural Park. The climb is symbolic – a visual metaphor for their arduous journey to success. Barefoot, determined, they ascend. The cinematography is striking: sweeping drone shots capture the sheer scale of the landscape, slow-motion sequences enhance the gravity of their pursuit, and the production quality is of cinematic mastery.

Then, a rupture in time – Calema is transported back to their childhood home in 1998. The film drifts into a dreamlike haze with carefully composed scenes of their younger selves, wide-eyed and barefoot, dressed in white. The past and present fold into each other. This is a film about home, about roots, about the sacredness of where you are from.

The music elevates the narrative. A delicate guitar instrumental sets an atmospheric tone before the duo’s soulful vocals take hold, carrying raw emotion. One of the most poignant moments is the sight of the young boys clutching a guitar and a microphone – innocent, unaware of the stage that awaits them. And then, that stage arrives. A vast venue, a performance of triumph.

Every element – direction, cinematography, editing, sound design – is executed to perfection. This is Calema’s story, told with beauty, precision, and heart.
