AKIN /a’kin/ – of similar nature

A brutally honest glimpse into a world most choose not to see.
4/5

Review

Stephanie Lane’s short doc is a searing wake-up call –  a stark, unflinching glimpse into the brutal reality of commercial pig farming. In just 4 minutes this film doesn’t just expose – it confronts and unsettles.

Shot with clarity by cinematographer Calvin Tasker, the film juxtaposes the eerie sterility of industrial pig pens with the heartbreaking innocence of the animals within them. The pigs – wide-eyed, curious, impossibly sweet – are not just subjects; they are individuals, unaware of the fate that awaits them. This contrast is what makes the film so devastating. It’s not an exposé – it’s a plea.

Featuring insights from Lane herself (Founder of SPECIESISM.WTF), Claire Palmer (Animal Justice Project), Jamie Logan (animal rights activist), and Susan Clarke (Campaign Manager at SPECIESISM.WTF), ‘AKIN’ isn’t about shock value – it’s about truth. The film strips away the sanitized narratives of the meat industry, forcing its audience to confront what is so often hidden. The result is a deeply upsetting but essential experience.

There’s an urgency to the film that makes it impossible to dismiss. There’s no detached storytelling here; the film is deeply personal, a raw and unfiltered act of defiance against an industry built on silence. The tone is relentless, pushing the viewer to not just witness but to sit in the discomfort, to acknowledge the suffering, to recognize complicity.

The high-quality cinematography and productional value ensure that every moment lands with weight. There’s no room to look away. ‘AKIN’ is not an easy watch. It’s a commendable, gut-wrenching, and necessary piece of activism – a film that leaves you shaken, questioning, and, perhaps, changed. Highly recommended viewing.
