Review

Sai Karan Talwar’s ‘What Men Do For Love’ is a gripping, one-shot real-time film that explores the fragile psyche of a heartbroken man, Charles (Jerome Wright), who takes the younger, more physically appealing Martin (Morgan Scriven) hostage after discovering an affair with his wife. The stark contrast between the aging Charles and the prime-of-life Martin forms the crux of the narrative, setting the stage for a tension-filled confrontation.

Filmed in striking black and white, Joshua Carrington Birch’s cinematography stands out as a marvel. The continuous shot technique, maintained throughout the entire runtime, is a visual treat, with well-lit, beautifully framed scenes that heighten the intensity of the story. The film’s real power, however, lies in its sharp-tongued dialogue and brilliant writing. Talwar pens a screenplay that feels almost theatrical, a two-hander that pits two intense characters against each other in a battle of wits.

As Charles contemplates murder, Martin’s quick thinking unravels the layers of Charles’ marital strife, shifting the blame away from himself and forcing Charles to confront the true cause of his misery – the dwindling flame in his marriage. This poignant and, at times, comical exchange not only provides deep psychological insight but also brings moments of dark humor that are both unexpected and refreshing.

Wright and Scriven deliver spectacular performances, imbuing their characters with a mix of desperation, anger, and vulnerability that feels both raw and real. The film delves deeply into themes of love’s erosion, self-confrontation, and the destructive paths we sometimes take in our quest for closure and revenge.

‘What Men Do For Love’ is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking, blending exceptional cinematography with razor-sharp writing and stellar performances. It’s a hard-hitting, multifaceted drama that should not be overlooked. Highly recommended.
