Amir El-Masry stars as Hugo in Amal Al-Agroobi comical sci-fi-drama ‘The Protocol’. The plot follows a desperate Hugo, whose claim to inherit his wealthy father’s estate is prolonged by his stubborn father’s use of a life-prolonging drug. The 4-minute short was produced in contention for a 48-hour film challenge. The result; a quirky narrative with professional cinematography and credible performances.
Al-Agroobi has excelled in fast-tracking such a production within 48-hours. Although the narrative feels slightly left unfinished, with viewers wanting to know more, the outstanding attention to detail with locations, costumes and acting, helps to prop-up the concept finely – a remarkable achievement with such a tight turnaround. Amir El-Masry (Hugo) leads the cast, carrying the short throughout. His performance captivates by the frustration and provides many moments of comic-relief.
The film explores a darker side to family relations – with personal gain prioritizing the happiness of others. Hugo, along with his sister, conspire to kill off their father – but events take a turn when additional siblings arrive thus weakening any financial gain. The film leaves viewers with food-for-thought; the expectations of inheritance, the value of parents and how money causes fractions within families. ‘The Protocol’ is a case study for those contending in a 48-hour film challenge. Highly recommended.
