Review

‘Last Set’, the latest short film by Joe Acierno, delves into the dark shadows of bodybuilding, shedding light on the harrowing pressures and pitfalls that accompany the pursuit of physical perfection. Penned by and starring Jose Alberto Alvarez as Montez, the narrative unfolds with raw authenticity, capturing the overwhelming weight of ambition and expectation that Montez grapples with.

Steve Downing delivers a palpable performance as Montez’s father, whose well-intentioned yet relentless pushing inadvertently pushes Montez toward the dangerous allure of steroids. Casey Ericson’s role of Garcia serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating the tragic consequences of succumbing to the seductive promises of performance-enhancing drugs.

‘Last Set’ explores the complex dynamics of father-son relationships, weaving tension and emotional depth throughout the narrative. The film’s power lies in its robust characters, all grappling with their own demons amidst the backdrop of a competitive world.

Acierno crafts a slow-burning drama, allowing the tension to simmer and the emotions to resonate. Mike Amari’s cinematography captures the somber essence of the story beautifully, while the sound design and editing further compliments it’s professionality.

The short fearlessly confronts the dark realities of steroids, serving as a stark awareness piece. ‘Last Set’ doesn’t shy away from the harsh truths, delivering a sobering yet compelling narrative throughout.
