Directed by Ernesto Garcia, from a script by Luis Lopez del Castillo, ‘Desert of Lights’ is an experimental short film that explores the neurotic psyche of an artist who finds himself isolated amidst a deserted wasteland. The narrative delves into the protagonist’s mental anguish, his emotional well-being and the illusions that overwhelm him. Luis Lopez del Castillo leads the cast as the Artist, with Stelly Vega as the Goddess of Creation. The unconventional tale, which omits any character dialogue, projects an eerie atmosphere that relies on character visual movements and expression – with accompanying music to convey the overall tone and action.
The 8-minute film, set entirely in one location with haunting slow-motion cinematography, opens with the solitude artist entering the picturesque desert landscape. As the dream-like sequence continues, we are introduced to an alluring pregnant woman – the Goddess of Creation (the artist’s apparition) as she buries curious looking objects in the desert. Whilst his torment intensifies, the Goddess expresses her bliss and mental tranquility with a dance-like performance – which contradicts the artists somber state-of-mind.
Ernesto Garcia and Luis Lopez del Castillo have created an immersive piece of experimental filmmaking that will mesmerize and enchant the viewing audience. Despite the puzzling narrative, the film is well orchestrated with outstanding cinematography, lighting and post-production. The musical soundtrack, which is certain to keep viewers captivated, fits nicely with the overall theme. A compelling watch. Highly recommended.
