Review

Directed by Ryan Lin, from a screenplay by Lin and Thaddeus Sonnier, ‘Dear Healthcare Worker’ is a short drama film that delves into the psychology of a Texas-based healthcare worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thaddeus Sonnie leads the cast as Tony, with Sarah Jack as his support wife and Woody Almazant as his colleague. Phillip Sonnier makes a brief appearance as Tony’s young son. The drama delves into the protagonist’s mental strain – fueled by the pressures of his profession. A poignant tale that dabbles with themes of guilt, religion and anxiety. A riveting watch from start-to-finish.

The 6-minute short opens with Tony seeking refuge in his Christian faith through prayer. Despite a loving home-life, Tony is engulfed with the calamity at the local hospital where he works. The narrative is set during the time of zero vaccinations, where hospitals are overwhelmed with patients and subsequent fatalities. Mental health acts as the principal theme, showcasing Tony’s mental fragility and fit of terror. A harrowing tale that many will resonate with.

Lin and Sonnier have crafted a neat production, with adept cinematography (Ryan Lin) and sound (Aulden Ruth). Sonnie delivers a praiseworthy performance from the offset – giving viewers a snapshot of the personal sacrifice and trauma many healthcare workers faced. Despite having a limited narrative, the drama is well constructed with quality acting delivery all round. Highly recommended.
