Black Constellation

A jaw-dropping drama that explores sexual abuse, grief and mental health.
4/5

Review

Written and directed by Jaime Urquiza, ‘Black Constellation’ is a short drama film centered around an intense group therapy session. Starring Jaime Urquiza as the critical counsellor, the narrative delves into the sobering plights of Armando (Stefano Borzato), Octavio (Rodrigo Santacruz) and Carla (Luciana González de León). DIego Lecanda completes the cast as Luis. The 28-minute short explores themes of sexual abuse, grief and mental health.

As Armando opens up about being a victim of childhood sexual abuse, the poignant tone becomes firmly set – or so we might think. The unflinching counsellor vehemently probes his clients on their woes – rewarding them with the “tough love” they’ve lacked for so long. Octavio, an over indulger in food and alcoholic is next on the firing line – unravelling his lack of faith in humanity. The short accelerates its level of poignancy as we uncover Carla’s grief after losing her 7-year-old son to a brain tumor. Disobedient throughout, Luis take’s the spotlight – unexpectedly turning his angst on the counsellor. Expect an unforeseen genre-bending climax that will leave your jaw on the floor.

Jaime Urquiza has crafted a remarkable drama that raises several thoughtful subject matters. Diego Franco’s stellar cinematography will no doubt keep audiences engrossed in the exceptional dialogue. Sound, post-production and lighting are equally commendable. With captivating portrayals throughout – notably by Urquiza and González de León – ‘Black Constellation’ is a short that shouldn’t be overlooked.
