Shadows of Waste

A poetic drama that delves into solitude and sexuality.

Review

Directed by Holly Adams, and based on the novella ‘Breath Upon a Burn’ by Jeff Stewart, ‘Shadows of Waste’ is a short drama film that delves into one man’s dispirited loneliness and his desire for human connection and sexual intimacy. Ali Agirnas leads the cast as the central protagonist. The drama, which is narrated by Agirnas, follows the man’s forthcoming romantic liaison. A nicely adapted poetic tale that explores themes of solitude, reflection and sexuality.

Throughout much of the 4-minute film, the central protagonist chews over his own internal thought process whilst waiting to attend a first-date. His long absence of sexual adventure has inflamed his erotic desire for a woman. After his date’s no-show becomes evidently apparent, the man begins to degrade his value. A somber character study of personal insecurity, albeit with a pretentious underbelly.

Holly Adams (Director) has crafted a captivating piece of film that honors the literacy work of Jeff Stewart. Her adaption is well orchestrated with a distinct focus on the narrative characterization. Unfortunately, the narrative could have been more comprehensive to keep viewers engaged with the themes. Having said that, Ali Agirnas delivers a commendable performance that is certain to keep viewers tuned in. Cinematography, post-production and sound are of a reasonable standard. A worthy watch.
