Review

4/5
A fantasy-themed mystery that delves into skepticism.
Written and directed by Luka Sticker, ‘The Winterwraith’ is a short mystery film which is based on an old Corinthian folk tale. Set in present-day Austria, the film examines the legitimacy of the Winterwraith – a bitter old woman who is said to lurk in a rural cabin. The film stars Sandro Kaponig as Sam, Janoš Pušnik as Leo and Phillip Rascher as Ben. Additional cast include; Sebastijan Krušic and Zalika Steiner. An enchanting fantasy that will allure viewers by its imposing cinematography and narrative suspense.

The 12-minute short opens in a pokey rural pub where Leo recounts a tale of a sighting to Sam and Ben. In dispute of the mythical woman’s existence, Sam embarks on a solo adventure to one of the cabins. The narrative explores themes of skepticism and trepidation with a comical underbelly.

The Winterwraith
Luka Sticker has crafted a captivating short that is brushed-up with a stellar young cast. Narrative aside, the technicality is truly breath-taking with picturesque cinematography and drone footage – high praise to David Krautzer and Simeon Rutter. Adept scene transitions aid the flow of the entire film – enhancing the fantasy-themed viewing experience. Post-production, sound and lighting are equally commendable. A charming film that is more than just pleasing to the eye – witty dialogue and narrative tension will keep viewers engaged and entertained. Highly recommended.
