Incognito

A tense thriller that explores sexual exploitation.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Ravi Muppa, ‘Incognito’ is a short thriller film that explores the sexual exploitation of a young Indian woman (Ayushi Nema). The film centres around the illicit behavior of a motel receptionist (Vikram Singh), who records hidden guestroom surveillance for an adult video sharing website. In spite of his illegal conduct, through his espionage he discovers a young woman held against her will. The short, which largely omits character dialogue, showcases themes of abuse, female empowerment and retribution. A riveting tale from start-to-finish.
Throughout the 25-minute short, the narrative focuses on the duplicity of the central character – the lonely motel receptionist. In spite of his initial sinister intensions, the film probes at his humanity and honor as he sets out to help the young girl from her trafficker (Dev Chauhan). Set in India, and in the Hindi language, the thriller is well casted with outstanding portrayals from the entire cast – particularly from Vikram Singh. His performance as the flawed character, who succumbs to his own conscience, is gripping viewing and is deserving of high acclaim.

Azim Moollan’s stellar cinematography seals the fate of this enthralling piece of film – coupled with adept lighting and post-production. Under Ravi Muppa’s considerate direction, ‘Incognito’ succeeds both narratively and technically. Ayushi Nema and Dev Chauhan’s portrayals are equally commendable. Highly recommended.
