Review

Written, directed and animated by Vilma Linnea Olsson, ‘Return to Sender’ is a partially animated drama film that explores the unforgotten memories of a dementia-stricken old man. The short centers around his composition of one final letter (to a special someone), intertwined with his life-long correspondents that have shaped the man he has become today. Erling Alf Olsson portrays the central character in an off-screen voice only performance. An endearing watch upheld by its elegant hand-drawn artistry.

The 8-minute short, which is a mix of live action drama and 2D animation, opens with the protagonist at his desk (filmed in POV) revealing the kept letters from his past – going back as far as his adventurous childhood encounters. Highly skilled craftmanship from Olsson conveys the narrative through splendid animative artistry which beautifully showcase the recollections.

Vilma Linnea Olsson has crafted a poignant tale that will bring compassion and resonation to many. Erling Alf Olsson delivers a heart-warming voice-over performance, which conveys the character’s fragility without fault. Despite adept animation, the live action segments would benefit from more advanced cinematography that would sync with the overall quality. Nonetheless, Olsson deserves applause and recognition. A heart-rending piece of film that shouldn’t be overlooked. Highly recommended.
