Butterfly Love

A tale of young love, heartbreak and letting go.

Review

Written and directed by Alex Kollmann, ‘Butterfly Love’ is a short experimental romance film that delves into teenage love and heartbreak. Starring Aiden Trickey as Carl and Morgan Ennis as Ella, the narrative explores the downswing of their high school courtship. The coming-of-age tale, which is produced on a shoe-string budget and of low production value, is certain to resonate with the viewing audience.

The 9-minute film, which is nicely shot by Kollman, highlights the closure of a once loving relationship. Carl and Ella have hit the end of the road as bitterness and animosity begins to surface. In a poignant conversation with Ella, Carl criticizes her lack of value in him – which only highlights their painful indifference. Ella’s mean-spirited aloofness strengthens Carl’s assurance that he deserves someone better – but fears his good memories with Ella may hinder his ability to form a future companionship. A hard-hitting watch of first love, letting-go and heartbreak.

In spite of the film’s poignant plot and bold dialogue, the acting deliver from the young cast is unfortunately clumsy and implausible. The cast come across overly-theatrical – lacking authenticity and emotionally distant. Sound recording is equally negligent. Despite those major flaws, cinematography and post-production is of a commendable standard that deserves high praise. Alex Kollmann has created a touching narrative that would definitely shine brighter with healthier performances.
