Endless Shades

A mental health drama about self-acceptance.
4/5

Review

Written and directed by René Rodlauer, ‘Endless Shades’ is a short mental health drama that delves into human insecurity, body dysmorphia and mental despair. The film, which acts as an awareness campaign for mental instability, stars Nadja Lengyel as the sole character. In voice-over, the character speaks to the viewing audience about her personal struggles. A beautifully crafted short with a poetic underbelly.

The 2-minute film opens with the young woman reflecting on her lack of self-esteem, discarded dreams and her apparent physical imperfections. Structured with a non-linear narrative, the drama showcases the young woman driving a pick-up truck into the wilderness. The film hints at the rise of social media as the root cause of contemporary mental health issues – as we see her struggling with her bio description and disclosing the unrealistic standards of perfection. A poignant watch from start-to-finish.

René Rodlauer has created a touching narrative that doesn’t shy away from showcasing character fragility. As the narrative progresses, the character develops her strength which will bring hope and optimism to many sufferers of mental health. Nadja Lengyel’s performance is praiseworthy and is certain to keep viewers engaged. Visually, the film is neatly crafted with industry level cinematography, lighting and post-production. ‘Endless Shades’ promotes self-acceptance, inner strength and being content with our defects. A fine short that is worth your precious 2-minutes.
