The Doll Collector

A fantastical horror about a peculiar cult ritual.
4/5

Review

Written and directed by Darius Clar, ‘The Doll Collector’ is a short horror film that explores the perils of a “quick-fix” cult ritual and paranormal curiosity. Starring Cinzia Lau as Sarah, with Aanchal Wadhwani as her girlfriend Lisa, the narrative explores their mysterious escapade at the behest of a hair-raising witch doctor, Madame Ashlyn (portrayed by Ines Laimins). Set in Hong Kong, the film is produced in the English language throughout. A chilling horror with a startling wind-up.

The entire 13-minute film takes place in a large derelict home – which alludes at trepidation on its own. Sarah and Lisa have arranged to meet Madame Ashlyn in order to cure the woes in their personal life – Sarah’s ill-health and Lisa’s financial struggles. Madame Ashlyn, with her cold and intimidating demeaner, guides them upstairs to undertake the spell – but things are not as initially promised.

Darius Clar has crafted a thrilling production with stellar craftsmanship in cinematography, lighting and post-production. In spite of the fantastical story-line and the peculiarity of the antagonist, the on-screen performances are enchanting to watch – particularly from Ines Laimins (Madame Ashlyn). Production design is on-point, which aids the sinister tone flawlessly. Audio and the accompanying sound effects are certain to provide riveting viewing. Highly recommended.
