An amusing animation that takes a satirical look at blind-dating.

Review

Written and animated by Christopher Oliver, ‘Muscle Chick Magnet’ is a short comedy film that takes a satirical look at blind dating. With dialogue omitted, the animation explores the judgment of outward appearances with humorous connotations. Despite its limited runtime, the light-hearted narrative will reward viewers with a couple of belly-laughs.

The 2-minute micro-short opens with JSwag, a well-known hip-hop artist, in a recording studio. His creativity is interrupted by a fan message on his smart-phone. Bethany (AKA Tall Sexy Blonde), a lifelong super-fan, has slid into his DMs (Direct Messages) with an invitation to meet. In a peculiar move, JSwag agrees. The narrative explores their initial meeting, which makes for comical viewing due to their physical differences. JSwag is ruffled by Bethany’s muscular physique – which is in stark contrast to his own slender frame. The film concludes with an endearing twist.

In spite of the film’s lean runtime, zero dialogue and brisk narrative, the 2D animation is well constructed. Christopher Oliver’s creative potential is admirable – a great effort for a micro short. The narrative relies solely on preconceived viewer judgment – which is strengthened by bold characterization. The use of interracial dating is also commendable. A neat animation that has potential to evolve. A funny watch.
