A Calling Void

A tense drama that explores life with anorexia nervosa.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Louise Domenach, ‘A Calling Void’ is a short drama film that gives an unflinching look at the life of a young woman battling anorexia nervosa. The narrative unravels the mental and physical decline of Emmanuelle, portrayed by Rachel Renaud, and explores themes of loneliness, obsession and anxiety. A poignant drama that is based on the real-life struggles of Louise Domenach (Writer/Director).

The 17-minute film opens with rolling intensity as we witness the rigorous self-control and daily routine of the protagonist. As Emmanuelle’s social life dissipates, she becomes increasing fixated on calorie limitation and exercise – much to her mother’s concern. The film allows viewers to glance into Emmanuelle’s inner thoughts and troubled mindset as we learn of her empowerment at “flirting with death”. After a family conflict, Emmanuelle is hospitalised against her will – which leads to a moving conclusion that will bring hope to many. A gripping drama from start-to-finish.

Louise Domenach deserves high acclaim for sharing her personal narrative in ‘A Calling Void’. Domenach doesn’t shy away from showcasing her truth and the ugly facts of the disease – this should be applauded. Rachel Renaud’s performance is simply exemplary and is filled with character complexities that only an ardent actress can delivery effortless – she does just that! Cinematography, post-production and sound are of a high industry standard that does the narrative justice. High praise to the entire cast/crew – a remarkable short well deserving of your time. Highly recommended.
