Review

Directed by Elmer J. Howard, from a script by Melissa Martin, ‘Kings & Queens’ is a short LGBTQ+ drama film that delves into a lesbian woman’s self-discovery amidst a turbulent personal life. Emily Kokidko leads the cast as Lucy, with Sara Brophy as Harper – Lucy’s ex-girlfriend. The drama explores the LGBTQ+ community after Lucy finds a job at a local drag bar. Additional cast include; Melissa Martin as Nikki – the barmaid, and Thomas Smallwood & Michelle Martin as the drag performers.

The 28-minute film opens with spectacular drone-cinematography of Portland, Maine. We are then introduced to an out-of-work Lucy, who is struggling with her identity and tenacity following a breakup. After securing a job at a local LGBTQ+ bar, Lucy finds solace in the drag community, leading to an unravelling of her self-identity and a rousing desire to become a drag King. ‘Kings & Queens’ is a heart-warming drama that probes at self-expression, community and embracement of individualism.

Elmer J. Howard and Melissa Martin have captured a dazzling narrative that is filled-to-the-brim with eccentricity and endearment. Emily Kokidko (Lucy) delivers an earnest performance from start-to-finish – a portrayal that will inspire, encourage and give hope to many. A nod to Thomas Smallwood and Michelle Martin for their drag-persona routines– a real treat of entertainment. Visually, the film is finely shot with stellar cinematography, sound and post-production. High praise to the entire cast/crew. Highly recommended.
