Throughout the Mirrors

A chilling horror film about body dysmorphia.
3/5

Review

Written and directed by Luisa Santos and Brianna Barnett, ‘Throughout the Mirrors’ is a short horror film that explores a young woman’s battle with body image. The film stars Emily Alas as Layla, with Dezire Hayward as the best friend (Hazel). Set entirely in an American high school, the short is produced without any character dialogue and explores themes of mental illness, societal pressure and self-image.

The 4-minute film opens with the hustle and bustle of the school canteen. Abstaining from her lunch, Layla sits deep in thought, day-dreaming about a dance performance. Despite care from best friend Hazel, Layla absconds from the canteen after a bout of hair-loss gathers in her hand. The film takes a sinister turn when disturbing and gory symptoms destroy her appearance. Layla’s self-sabotaging state-of-mind has entirely consumed her. A stirring watch that doesn’t shy away from extremities.

Luisa Santos and Brianna Barnett have created a chilling film that will unnerve the audience. The silent horror is also filled with poignancy – thanks to the melancholic and fitting soundtrack (Hate by Lucas King). Cinematography is noteworthy, captured with industry level quality throughout. Post-production, particularly the transitions within the edit, is nicely constructed and pleasing to watch. A commendable and moving performance from Emily Alas (despite zero dialogue) – a talent to keep-an-eye-on. Highly recommended.
