Outsider

A poignant drama about privilege and racial discrimination.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Kaashif Hajee, ‘Outsider’ is a short drama film that explores racial prejudice, identify and privilege in Abu Dhabi. Pavan Jaini leads the cast as elite high school student Armaan, a second-generation migrant (of Indian origin) who yearns to fit in with his peers. Sakhawat Kayani co-stars as Ali, a hard-working Pakistani migrant who struggles with family separation. The short is produced in the Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu languages – with English subtitles throughout.

The 10-minute drama opens with Ali driving his taxi around Abu Dhabi. Separated by his family, he is devoted to sending his income home to support them in Pakistan. We are subsequently introduced to Armaan, a young high schooler from a wealthy family of Indian ethnicity. Ali and Armaan come together during a taxi ride to Armaan’s private school. Ali rewards him with his wisdom and to appreciate his privilege. Later, during a drug-induced car accident, Armaan is reunited with Ali – who is subjected to indirect and direct discrimination from Armaan’s local friends.

Kaashif Hajee (Writer/Director) gives a salient reminder to his audience of societal prejudice and intolerance. The entire cast deliver profound performances throughout – particularly Sakhawat Kayani – a touching portrayal of a second-class citizen. Visually, the film is beautifully captured with fine cinematography from start-to-finish. Sound and post-production are equally commendable. ‘Outsider’ is an unmissable short. Highly recommended.

Brief Synopsis
