Directed by Andre Sansbury and Elijah Smith, from a script by Sansbury, ‘Toxic Tales Part 2’ is a music short film that explores the ups and downs of a contemporary relationship. Andre Sansbury leads the cast as Mr. Toxic with Tajah Cloyd as Miss Toxic – a couple bound together in eroticism in spite of their clashing character flaws. Additional cast include; Kristi Lewis and Abby. The hip-hop inspired video and soundtrack delves into themes of sexuality, betrayal, heartbreak and abuse. The film will reward viewers by it’s urban quality, seductive imagery and poetic lyrics.

The 7-minute video opens with a phone conversation – the only exchange of character dialogue. We are subsequently introduced to Mr and Miss Toxic as their sexuality and musicality intertwine in an unhealthy passion. Throughout the entire short we learn, through song, of their lust for one and other – acted out in a back-and-fourth musical performance. Their relationship is tested, through the lyrics, hinting at narcissistic personality disorder, infidelity and emotional violation. The film doesn’t shy away from highlighting some modern-day romances in light of social media and societal change.

Andre Sansbury and Elijah Smith have created a hard hitting musical film that will stimulate, educate and entertain. Musically, the lyrics and melodies are laudable – with admirable vocal performances throughout. Visually, lighting and cinematography are of a high standard that will keep viewers engaged and enthralled in the performances. The narrative is entirely wrapped up within the lyrics, which requires attentive listening. The visual narrative can be a struggle to comprehend and would benefit from clarity and synchronization with the lyrics.
