The Blame Game

A lively comedy that explores the break-up of a relationship.
5/5

Review

Directed by John Patrick Daly, from a script by Daly & Lana Rae Jarvis, ‘The Blame Game’ is a short comedy film that explores the break-up of a young couple. John Patrick Daly stars as Reed, who is perplexed by Jesse’s (Lana Rae Jarvis) decision to end their relationship. To shake off their hostility, the exes are enforced into a game show about their history together, which subsequently mends their bitterness. The comedy delves into themes of heartbreak, incompatibility and acceptance. J.B. Bauersfeld lends his talent as the voice of the show. Despite the narrative poignancy, the film is an amusing watch with witty dialogue throughout.

The 12-minute film opens in melancholy where Reed and Jesse sleep separately in their home together. As the former couple divide their possessions, they suddenly – as if by magic – find themselves as contestants on a TV game-show. Powerless to leave, they are pitted against each other in a series of revealing question rounds to highlight their relationship woes.

John Patrick Daly and Lana Rae Jarvis have created an enthralling short that is highly entertaining all round. Their portrayals as Reed and Jesse will provide viewers a tonne of belly-laughs. In the face of sorrow and the potential hope for reunification, the narrative cleverly shifts in tone several times throughout – giving the characters a compelling three-dimensional quality. Production design and cinematography is of an exemplary standard and of high industry-level quality. Sound and post-production are equally praiseworthy. Highly recommended.
