Review

Written and directed by Fraser Denholm, ‘Dweller’ is a short sci-fi horror film that explores one man’s isolation in an apocalyptic bunker. Jason Harvey leads the cast as Pete, who is startled by the arrival of Sophie (Megan Birley) – the first person he has seen in 4000 days. A gripping tale that will keep viewers captivating from start-to-finish.

The 34-minute film opens with Pete’s daily routine in a self-sustaining underground bunker. When an alert of a breach to the entrance, Pete goes into full combat mode to defend his accustomed life in safe solitude. We are then introduced to Sophie, a young woman who has spent over 10-years in decaying civilization in search for a safe place. The film explores their contrasting experiences and delves into themes of judgment, betrayal, loss and guilt. The narrative takes a sinister turn when the bunker begins to power-up previously unused facilities.

Fraser Denholm has created an enthralling short that will enact viewer empathy in light of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Jason Harvey delivers a riveting performance throughout, enhanced by Megan Birley’s comical retort. Production/costume design, cinematography, sound and editing are of a highly professional standard that emulates a cinematic experience. Despite dialogue-heavy scenes, viewers will be engrossed by high drama and thrill from the get-go. Highly recommended.
