Goldilocks

A Hollywood style sci-fi drama that doesn’t fail to impress.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Blake Simon, ‘Goldilocks’ is a short sci-fi drama that follows Ray Ashford, an astronaut on a mission to discover an Earth-like planet. Curtis Bechdholt leads the cast as Ray, whose mission is threatened by a technical failure. The film explores themes of survival, exploration, adventure and loss. Despite its science fiction narrative, the film will captivate viewers with scenes of poignancy throughout.

The 18-minute film opens with a clip of John F. Kennedy’s famous 1962 moon speech. We are then introduced to an isolated Ray Ashford onboard his space shuttle. Separated by his astronaut wife, who is on another mission, Ray is alerted to a circuit failure with his craft that has led to communication failures with his team. Upon repair, he receives a delayed message from his wife – who reveals her failed mission to an uninhabitable planet and her inability to leave. Ray is now faced with a heart-breaking journey of grief, whilst focusing on his own survival expedition.

Viewers will be impressed with the high level of production design, particularly within the space-craft. An awe-inspiring short film that gives Hollywood a run for its money. Curtis Bechdholt’s performance is captivating throughout – holding up the entire film on his own. Blake Simon (Writer/Director) has created an enthralling narrative that will pull at the viewers heart-strings. Cinematography, special effects, sound and post-production are highly commendable. A well-constructed film with an astonishing cinematic quality.
