Motociclista

A chilling drama that explores child marriage in Latin American.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Eugen Merher, ‘Motociclista’ is a short experimental drama film that gives an unflinching account of childhood marriage in Latin America. The film delves into the career aspirations of young girl, restricted by family values and religion. Clara Rolfo leads the cast as the young bride who is forced by society into a union against her will, despite her dreams of motorcycle racing. The short was created to bring global attention to the fact that 1 in 4 Latin American girls are married before the age of 18. The film is entirely in the Spanish language with English subtitles throughout.

The 3-minute film opens was the young girl day-dreaming about motor racing. Her brother (Giuliano Giacussa) talks freely about his desire to become a professional footballer – highlighting the gender difference with career goals. Throughout the film, we see the young Catholic girl being conformed by her mother (Catherine Ayala) and the trauma of her nuptials to her husband (Felipe Speranza). The film is intercut with various shots of motorcycle racing.

Eugen Merher has delivered a poignant film that doesn’t shy away from showcasing the limitations young women face in Latin American and the Caribbean. Clara Rolfo delivers a fine performance as the young bride. Despite limited dialogue, the film showcases the protagonist’s inner struggle through character emotions and body-language. Visually, the film is beautifully shot with professional cinematography throughout. Sound, editing and music are equally commendable. A chilling watch. Highly recommended.
