Be Still

A poignant drama about a miscarriage.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Ben Hess, ‘Be Still’ is a short drama film that delves into one woman’s miscarriage journey. Tabitha Tyree leads the cast as Caroline, a heavily pregnant woman who struggles to overcome her momentous loss. The poignant drama explores themes of anxiety, depression, female empowerment and relationships. The drama was inspired by the filmmaker’s own personal experience, with the intension to raise awareness.

The 12-minute film opens with Caroline attending a regular appointment with her obstetrician. After undergoing initial checks, the doctor (Andrea Dratch) refers her for an ultra-sound, due to a missing heart-beat. As Caroline’s emotion state declines, her fears are sadly realized. The film utilizes symbolic imagery of crashing tides to convey Caroline’s mental health. Caroline is supported by her partner (Alex Forbes) and her doula (Julianne Curtis). The film concludes with the couple attending a support group to work through their grief.

Ben Hess has created a deeply moving drama that gives an unflinching account of baby-loss. The narrative focuses on the protagonist’s mental health from the off-set, portrayed impeccably by Tabitha Tyree. Ben Hess is mindful not to overstate the tragedy, relying solely on character expression than unnecessary dialogue. The subject matter is handled with committed sensitivity and that should be applauded. Cinematography, sound, music and post-production is delivered to an impeccable standard. An important piece of filmmaking. Highly recommended.
