Review

Directed by Alisi Telengut, ‘The Fourfold’ is a short experimental animation that delves into Animism – a religious belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. Showcased with stop-motion animation, the film gives viewers an insight into the rituals and practices of Shamanism in Siberia and Mongolia. A meticulously crafted film with breath-taking artistic imagery. The film is narrated in the Mongolian language with English subtitles.

The 7-minute documentary opens with an array of creative visuals, beautifully constructed in stop-motion to help convey the intriguing narrative. The film makes use of natural materials, such as plant-life, within the animation. We learn about Mother Earth, a living sentient being, and Father Sky – who provides us with our internal identity; consciousness, free will. The film teaches us about the practice of milk libation and how nature is the homeland to human beings.

‘The Fourfold’ may be a startling watch for the ill-informed of Animism, but you will certainly appreciate the remarkable creative effort gone into the production. Alisi Telengut has created a mesmerizing film with the intention to educate and inspire. The musical soundtrack is provided by Huun-Huur-Tu and the Bulgarian Voices Angelite. The audience may get lost following the foreign voice-over, but the core animation is captivating to watch. Highly recommended.
