Eternity

A poetic tale of eternity inspired by J.L. Borges and J.S. Bach.
4/5

Review

Ekaterina Chatski’s experimental micro-short is a mesmerizing fusion of poetry, music, and visual artistry. Inspired by the profound words of Argentine poet J.L. Borges and set to Bach’s Prelude in B-flat minor, the film embarks on a poetic journey exploring the concept of eternity. Chatski’s creative vision is evident from the outset, as the decaying leaf juxtaposed with Borges’ words serves as a poignant metaphor for the passage of time and the eternal cycle of life and death.

The film’s simplicity is its strength; the minimalist animation and live-action elements allow the audience to focus on the profound thematic exploration. Chatski’s use of poetic animation, combined with her musical performance, creates a deeply moving and contemplative atmosphere. The delicate interplay between the falling leaf and Bach’s composition is masterfully executed, evoking a sense of melancholy and introspection.

‘Eternity’ is a testament to the filmmaker’s artistry and creativity. Despite its brevity, the film manages to convey a profound message about the enduring nature of existence. Through its experimental approach and poetic storytelling, this micro-short captivates viewers, leaving them in awe of its beauty and depth. It stands as a shining example of how the fusion of different artistic elements can create a truly immersive and emotionally resonant cinematic experience.

Brief Synopsis

According to the words of J.L. Borges in his work “A History of Eternity”, “eternity is a simpler and more magical thing: it is the simultaneity of those times… The past is in its present, as is the future.”

In the short film, a metaphor is created with the “leaf” of a tree that withers and falls onto the “leaf” of paper, which is in turn a score of J.S. Bach’s Prelude in B-flat minor, which incidentally is played throughout the journey of the protagonist, the “leaf”. The timeless rhythms of Bach’s genius resonate, that immortal genius who centuries ago left his legacy on the eternal “leaves” of his scores, transcending time.
