Review

Written and directed by Sarah Shan Lou, ‘In the Fridge’ is poignant animation that delves into childhood nostalgia surrounding a mother/daughter relationship. A heart-warming film that explores themes of loneliness, family, love and regret. The entire film is composed of hand-drawn animation and is constructed without any character dialogue.

The 4-minute film opens with a woman returning home to her depleting refrigerator. Upon reflection, she retreats back to her childhood memories. We learn of her absent mother, due to an unbalanced work/home life, and the loneliness she felt returning home from school. Her mother’s love was received in the form of pre-prepared food of her favorite dishes. An emotional watch from start to finish.

Sarah Shan Lou has created a deeply moving film that may tease a tear or two out of the viewer. ‘In the Fridge’ is both artistically brilliant and an experimental triumph (narratively). The film is animated using traditional hand-drawn methods, bringing a real sense of craftmanship and beauty. Coupled with a sentimental soundtrack, the short is delivered to a highly professional finish that will spellbind the audience. High praise to Shan Lou – a fresh talent to keep an eye on. Highly recommended.
