Our Stories Matter

4/5
A documentary that explores historical LGBTQ+ figures connected to the Isle of White.

Synopsis

A documentary that explores the Isle of Wight’s hidden LGBTQ+ connections.

Review

Directed by Franko Figueiredo, ‘Our Stories Matter’ is a short documentary that delves into the LGBTQ+ history of the Isle of White, showcasing the people and places that are connected with the island on the south coast of England. The narrative is told through contributions by some of today’s LBGTQ+ islanders and is part of ‘Out On An Island’ – a project that embraces local LGBTQ+ history.

The 39-minute film opens by exploring the life of Joe Carstairs, who was known for being the fastest woman on water in the 1920s. Born Marion, she was a lesbian oil-heiress who lived her life in men’s clothing. The documentary also educates viewers about some of the lesbian and bisexual women from Ferguson’s Gang. They were National Trust “gangsters” – an anarchic group of women formed in 1927. We also learn about the poet Alfred Tennyson, and the painters Jony Seely and Paul Paget. A fascinating watch that brings attention to historical LGBTQ+ figures that were deliberately erased from the history books.

Despite being a low-budget documentary, ‘Our Stories Matter’ still manages to reward viewers with captivating life-stories. Featuring Jamie Irvine, Krysia Mansfield, Andrew Butcher, Tommie Venier, Gary Fairhall, Harriet Jane, Georgie Rennie, Lisa-Maria Saidinayer, the group deliver outstanding and educational presentations. Awe-inspiring cinematography of the island is a treat to watch. Highly recommended.
