Written and Directed by Filipino-Australian Martin Ponferrada, ‘Sí’ explores the subject of sexual consent – but with a thought-provoking feminist standpoint. This bilingual short film focuses on the date of Carlos, a charming Peruvian, and Anita, a stunningly self-assured Spaniard.
Martin’s short film bravely places itself into several genres throughout the 9-minutes. We are introduced into the romance of a date, twisting gently into a comedic-psychological-drama. Conflict arises when Carlos (Carlo Sardon) pulls back from sexual interactions with Anita (Luz Rodriguez-Basavilbaso), after she confesses to being date-raped in the past. Understandably, he selflessly interrupts his sexual interest to ensure she doesn’t feel used in any way – a decision she rejects profusely. This sparks a clever debate of true female empowerment that educates and provokes a fresh outlook to the viewer.
The final act is executed with a triumphant 4 and half minute continuous shot, enabling the viewer to feel part of the intimate conversation. Unique within conflict, the film leads the viewer far away from taking sides. Narratively this should fail to engage the audience – however the concept is strong and therefor compelling to watch.
Throughout the film the characters dip in and out of Spanish and English – a skilful way to maximise viewership from across the world. ‘Sí’ is an outstanding short film that deserves the widest audience. It’s relevancy in today’s society, aided by a stellar cast, seals its success.
